Turnaround Season: Order Observation Doors and Furnace Hardware Before Your Outage
Plan the parts as early as the outage
Refinery turnarounds are scheduled months in advance. Crews are booked, permits are lined up, and the scope is set long before the unit comes down. Furnace hardware often gets ordered last, and that is where schedules slip.
Observation doors, peep sights, and access hardware look like small line items. But custom pieces are built to order, and lead times can run longer than the time left before your outage. If you want them installed during the shutdown, they need to be ordered now.
Why lead times matter
Most fired heater and furnace hardware is not pulled off a shelf. Each piece is fabricated to fit a specific opening, wall thickness, and operating temperature. That means drawings, material sourcing, fabrication, and inspection all happen before anything ships.
In the months before turnaround season, fabrication shops also see a rush of orders from every refinery planning the same window. Ordering early keeps your parts ahead of that queue and gives you time to confirm dimensions before the unit is down.
A missing door or sight port during an outage leaves two options: delay startup, or run another cycle with worn hardware. Neither is a good trade for a part that could have been ordered in advance.
What to put on the order list
Walk your heaters and furnaces with the outage scope in hand. Look for anything warped, cracked, sticking, or no longer sealing. Common items include:
Observation doors that no longer close tightly or show heat damage around the frame
Peep sights and sight glasses that are clouded, cracked, or hard to see through
Access and inspection doors with worn hinges, latches, or gaskets
Burner and header box hardware that will be exposed and easier to replace during the shutdown
If a part is borderline, replace it now. Swapping hardware during a planned outage is far simpler than doing it later on a running unit.
A simple ordering timeline
When the outage date is set: inspect hardware and build a replacement list.
Right after inspection: send dimensions, drawings, or photos to your fabricator for a quote.
Once quoted: confirm lead times against your outage date and place the order.
Before shutdown: receive and inspect parts on site so crews are ready on day one.
The earlier step one happens, the more room you have if a part needs a design change.
